Called luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or luxury vinyl floor (LVF), this is vinyl flooring that comes in long, narrow strips; it's made by cutting the vinyl mounting it on boards to mimic hardwood planks.
Stylish enough for any room in the house, the image is created with 3D photography, making it vibrant and clear. Images are realistic, displaying knots, grains, swirls, and color/veining variations. Deep embossing gives it depth, dimension, and textured appearances: wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed.
Finishes are available in matte, gloss, and high gloss finishes, and planks are usually 48 X 64 with widths of six or seven-plus. Structurally, it differs from sheet vinyl, which is more flexible with a printed top layer covered by a clear wear layer, but this one has multilayers, giving it a firmer feeling. An underlayment is created from rigid vinyl, with additional layers being the core; image layer; a clear thin film that shields from rips and tears; and a top clear, aluminum oxide wear layer that guards against scratches and scuffs.
Vinyl plank is thicker than a standard sheet with a firm, authentic hardwood feeling, available in densities up to 9-mm, 10-mm or 12-mm. The thicker is better. The installation is the floating floor where the pieces click together like a puzzle, form a mat, and hovers over the subfloor with no nails or glue. Subfloors only need to be clean, dry, and level.
